The all new Pearl Grader now grades Akoya Pearls, South Seas Pearls, Tahitian Black Pearls and Freshwater Pearls. The Pearl Grading module is based on the pearl grading system found in "The Guide" published by Gemworld International.
To open the Pearl Grader do one of the following: click on the 4th speedbar icon from the left (see below: it has a strand of pearls and an A+) or click on the Tools menu and select Pearl Grading.
The pearl grading module opens at the Type input box. Select the type of pearls you are grading (Akoya Pearls, South Seas Pearls, Tahitian Black Pearls or Freshwater Pearls). Press Enter and the focus moves to Size. Here you will enter the range of pearl size in your strand. Note the edit box at the bottom of the screen shows the Field Definitions. These definitions take you through each step of the process explaining the field you are currently in. Enter the Strand Length in any format you wish (inches, mm's, cm's etc). This field is descriptive only. It doesn't figure into the grade of the strand.
The Shape field is the first grading field. You grade the pearls by reading the definitions and selecting a rating from 1 to 10. In the Akoya Shape field you'll see that there are three grades for Round (10, 9 and 8). If you think all the pearls in the strand are perfect then you would grade them 10 - Round. If they were slightly less perfectly Round you might pick 9 - Round. At the rating of 8 we have some overlap. You could select 8 - Round or 8 - Near Round. There is no difference between the two grades except for the label. The number 8 will carry the same weight when you make the final grade. Repeat the process for all the fields. Press F2 or click the Grade button.
Above is the data entry screen for Akoya Pearls.
The Output Screen (shown above) is where you find the final grade for your pearl strand. On the lower right of the screen you can see where you enter the Low price from "The Guide", press Enter, and then enter the High price. The program will then interpolate the data to provide the approximate wholesale price. VIEW: On the Output Screen you have the option to Print, or View your grading report. If you select View, you will see the view screen. Here you will be able to Print a straight text copy, Save the report to a file, or Copy the report to the Windows clipboard. If you copy the report to the clipboard and insert it into a word processor, it will appear with the columns in a centered format (they will not line up properly). This is because the report originated in a fixed-pitch font (Courier New). If you select all of the text in the report and change the font to Courier the columns will line up.
PRINTING: If you want to print a report click the Print button. If you want to add a header to print on every report select File and then Print Header. If you don't want a header but your pages are printing too high (such as overwriting your existing letterhead) then increase the number in the Blank Lines box of the Print Header menu and click the Clear button.
